Vinmotive takes a hike

In honor of Earth Day.

You never know what you will find off of the beaten path! Text, pictures and errors by: Chris Breeden

Vinmotive’s efforts to celebrate Earth Day 2024, started an entire week early. Instead of hitting the treadmill, I hit a local walking trail at a state park. The trip did not disappoint. To my surprise I found two early touring cars rotting in one of Tenessee’s State Parks. Both are in Rock Island State Park on the Collins River Nature Trail.

Early spring and the forest floor is still bare.

The first automobile is found on a cut-through off of the main trail called the Cunningham Connector Trail.

It looks like the car narrowly escaped a tree fall this winter.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen a sign… scraped clean. Someone get these rangers some Windex!

A sign stands beside the heap giving information about the area and pointing out the fact that many such artifacts can be seen along the trail

This early fender was spotted between the two cars.

The next one was encountered a few hundred yards past the first.

The second car lies just off of the main trail. No signs are present, but a path has been cleared to allow access.

Soon the summer growth will bury this one.

This repair on a rear fender shows the car was once cared for. It has now become a home to wild animals.

The juxtaposition of two rusting cars in the middle of a beautiful nature sitting is a strange sight. I have Earth Day to thank for seeing it.

The Collins River Nature Trail is a well-maintained, 2.65-mile loop full of towering trees and wonderful views of the nearby river. The trail is easygoing but has a few steep hills that come in quick succession. I invite you to head out to your nearest hiking trail today and have a short stroll.
